Generally Feeling Down? – 3 Ways to Lift Your Mood

By: Robert William Locke If you are generally feeling down, there are probably many reasons for this and I cannot even begin to list them all here! However, there are three easy ways to enhance mood and make you feel better so that the sensation of generally feeling down will occur with less frequency. There is no need to take prescription drugs or anti depressants because this type of mild depression or dysthymia can be positively affected by a few lifestyle changes which are incredibly easy to implement. 

Food affects mood. But which food? There is all this talk about the amino acid called tryptophan (found in most proteins) which can actually help to manufacture more of the serotonin, the good mood chemical in our brains. But we also need the right carbohydrates to help this tryptophan to get into our brains. 

Research at the University of Arizona actually shows that those people who had reduced their intake of carbohydrates were suffering from fatigue and had no desire to exercise. This was noticed after just two weeks, which just goes to show how easily food can affect our state of mind and happiness. 

So, the first way is to choose the right carbohydrates which will help with the tryptophan manufacturing processes. The ones to go for are the complex carbohydrates like wholegrain cereals, vegetables, legumes and fruit. 

The essential fatty acids or omega 3 fats have been shown to lift mood too. Adding these as supplements is my second way to make sure that I am getting enough of these to avoid generally feeling down. I know that some studies have shown that depressed people were found to have a lack of Omega 3 fats. 

My third way to left mood is to get out in the fresh air and do a few things like walking, running, having lunch in the open, sitting on a park bench. Anything you like. We know that exposure to the sun, fresh air and any contact with nature will lift our mood. Studies have shown that depressed people, children with ADHD and many other categories all benefit. Actually, exposure to the sun itself, for a limited time can really enhance mood, make you feel less anxious and generally increase well being.
